A Story of How Reinvention to Stay Relevant Lead to Being an Agile Great Place to Work
Have you ever been looking for actual case studies of how a once successful company reinvents itself through agile, to continue being a relevant, market leading organization that is also a great place to work? If yes, then this talk is for you!
This talk will cover the journey of two South East Asian online jobs marketplaces that were pioneers during the first .com revolution, only to fall behind as global competitors emerged. Both were acquired and merged to form a single entity, however that was merely the start of a new journey to not only stay relevant, but be renewed and successful.
This is a story of a leadership team brought together to revitalise, energize and reinvent once mighty giants which lead to being recognised with the World Agility Forum 2020’s Agile Great Place to Work award.

Coaching Mindshift Across Borders and Timezones
A personal story about how my client was affected by the virus; scattered suddenly from co-location to being spread over 2 continents in 3 countries (China, France, and the UK) and how I had to switch my mindset, work routine, tools, and coaching to support them through these challenging times.

Through this session, you will see what struggles the journey had, what worked and what didn't, get real-life examples of switching into a fully virtual way of working with a project which should not allow that. You will also get hands-on experience with one of the tools that were greatly utilised in this phase.

Building the Digital Workforce for Disruptive Innovation
While we see disruption happening everywhere and the world is experiencing unforeseen crisis, many organizations are not able to respond quickly to these situations. One of the primary reason is their current workforce is not ready for it. In this session, I will share my experiences of how some of the organizations we have worked with, have built the digital workforce and nurturing such talent to take on these challenges, embrace change and move fast. The areas that I will cover in this session are around building digital talent portfolio, hiring for culture, building the learning organization and scaling the workforce in a non linear way.

Setting Your Organisation Up For Success - How To Build an outcome driven organization

Gabrielle Benefield and Tao Baker will introduce you to Mobius, a radically simple way to get to the outcomes that matter. It is a strategic navigator and innovation toolkit, creating a continuous flow of value across the organization.
Rather than prescribe one set of practices or one framework, this next-generation approach allows you to combine models in new and novel ways so you can customize it across all levels of your organization.

Diplomatic Rebels - Disrupting large organizations from within
How to challenge the status quo with disruptive and provocative new ideas and projects – without losing the support and respect from colleagues and management? This is a difficult balance and many intrapreneurs either give up and do as they are told, or they burn out and leave. To overcome this, the intrapreneur will need to balance the rebel nature of the innovator with the diplomatic skills of the corporate navigator, and companies will need to build a culture of intrapreneurship. The presentation will include insights on:
Embracing disruptions without disrupting the healthy existing business
Building a strategic foundation and structure for radical innovation
Fast and low-risk learning using design thinking and agile development
Fostering a culture of Intrapreneurship
Becoming a Diplomatic Rebel
Audience takeaways: Understand the 5 habits of highly impactful intrapreneurs and how to become a Diplomatic Rebel. Learn how to foster and train these skills and how to build and lead an organization of diplomatic rebels.
Speaker qualification: David Gram, Co-Founder of Diplomatic Rebels and former Venture Partner at LEGO Ventures, has worked with radical innovation in large organizations his entire career and thus learned the hard way what it takes to become a successful and impactful intrapreneur, or as he calls it, a Diplomatic Rebel. He has co-founded the company Diplomatic Rebels, which helps companies become more intrapreneurial and intrapreneurs become more impactful.

From Little´s Law to team happiness and how Math explains why and how SCRUM works. Queuing theory can help explain why Agile Principles work with a human centered approach applied to teams (IT and non-IT). This approach was implemented in Anheuser-Bush InBev Middle Americas to create our Agile LAB. This idea helped us expand our learning to other teams and scale up by using “self-organized” teams to solve user, customer and consumer problems.

The Organizational "Muscles" needed to Build Business Agility
Business agility is a set of organizational capabilities, behaviors, and ways of working that affords your business the freedom & flexibility to achieve its purpose. Achieving business agility is not simple. There is no silver bullet or single framework, method, or system that delivers business agility to all companies in the same way. However, similar to how an athlete has specific regimens to develop certain muscles group needed to help them realize their goal or aspiration, organizations need to develop certain "organizational muscles" to achieve their desired degree of Business Agility. In this talk, Ahmed Sidky, Co-founder of the Business Agility Institute, will go through the 12 "organizational muscles" (more formally known as the Domains) of Business Agility. He will also illustrate how these "muscles" are not developed in isolation but actually, similar to the human body, they all work together to make the whole organization more agile.

Scale like a Startup
Imagine you're a startup, either within an existing company (intrapreneurship) or as a new corporate entity, like FirstRoot (entrepreneurship). While you're starting small, you want to 'grow into something big' - and you want to leverage the best thinking possible as you do it!
You could start with Scrum or Kanban. But then you'd end up piecing together all of the rest of what you need to be successful - things like market segmentation, personas, journey maps, story maps, and financial modeling. Instead of building your solution, you'd spend a lot of time building how to build your solution.
Of course, if you're a methodologist, that's exactly what you love to do! You love to piece stuff together and tailor methods. But if you're an intra or entrepreneur, you'd rather invest that time in building your company.
Startups also need to make significant investment decisions. Invest money wisely and you grow. Spend money poorly and fail. It would therefore be ideal if your process supported you in making high-impact portfolio choices. And because startups are dealing with extreme uncertainty, it would be ideal if the investment decision-making process promoted collaboration with employees, investors, customers, and partners/suppliers. And when these portfolio decisions result in contracts, it would be ideal if contracts you create are grounded in agile values.
The approach we are taking at FirstRoot is to start with the Portfolio Configuration of SAFe® and lightly tailor it to meet our needs. This might seem surprising, as many people perceive SAFe as a 'heavy' or 'complex' method. Starting with SAFe is starting with the end in mind: if you're successful, you will created a culture geared for growth: your founding team will know that the practices they're using are the practices that future teams will be using. Instead of being a methodologist and building methods, you can be an entrepreneur and build solutions.
Luke will share the story of how FirstRoot, a Silicon Valley startup designed to promote economic equality through Participatory Budgeting, is preparing to scale by starting with scaling in mind. Key learnings include the importance of selecting an uber-architecture, how to build the domain knowledge needed to create a high-performance development organization from scratch, how to leverage design thinking to ensure you’re building the right thing, and how to balance strategy (long range thinking and planning) with tactics (the iterations and Sprints of Agile).

How to Capitalize on Agile’s Potential?
Success and failures of setting up an agile culture into CNN’s dynamic environment.

In an interactive conversation we will cover examples of what made agile work in CNN and Warner Media. Bryan will walk through examples of the best approaches they’ve used to make it successful. At the end of our conversation, we will discuss some of the consistent problems we observe across industry where companies could benefit from integrating agile methodologies and what could support them turning into successful stories.

The story …
  • How agile really works?
  • What are the common forms of agile approaches (Scrum, Kanban and Lean Development) to innovation and how they look in practice?
  • Understanding of where agile works and does not.

Extreme Hiring for Agile Teams
Hiring an Agile team has its own set of unique challenges.
An important part of creating a high performing Agile team is the hiring process for team members. An underperforming or disruptive Agile team member can quickly reduce productivity and team harmony. Hiring managers need to interview Agile team members differently than typical personnel hires. Typical one-on-one interviews are no longer adequate to identify high performing Agile team members. In order to ensure that you identify and hire high performing Agile team members, you need to leverage a group interview process. This means real-life simulations with a team versus asking questions one-on-one.
This session will explain how to leverage effective Group Interviews to rapidly assess the attributes of Agile team candidates:
- a. How to organize Agile team group interviews
- b. How to select group interview candidates
- c. How to structure the group interview
- d. How to orchestrate the group interview
- e. How to assess the candidates post-group interview
- Successes and lessons learned from my experience in performing Agile team group interviews

Life will always send a curve ball in our direction. But present cirumstances are not going away and we must be Bold, Brave and Tune our Mindset, expertise into ways, methods, tools, thinking to create a personal and professional life that fulfills.Gives Hope, Purpose and growth in all that we embody. Kaching: a Study in Breadth-First Business Agility
This is the story of how a simple but revolutionary "breadth-first" approach to business agility won ”Most Innovative Retail Banking Product” at ABFM 2012, "Best App" in Innovation, Effectiveness and Financial Industry at AIMIA 2013, and the Commonwealth Banking Group's CIO prize for best project in the bank. The resulting banking channel was valued at over $9 Billion by the AFR in 2013 and today, rebranded as "The CBA App", serves over 7 million customers.
This is also the story of how these successful practices were forgotten by the bank that pioneered them, and how they've since been applied to delivery and change programs in Australia and around the world. The session will cover no SAFe, Scrum, Design Thinking or Lean Startup ideas as they all go depth-first, not breadth-first. It's a novel contribution to the Business Agility literature that truly goes "beyond the limits".

In the era of virtual working and agile transformations, what about the human intelligence?
Evelyn, CEO of a big company, sits at her desk staring out of the window. At the beginning of 2020 she kicked-off a digital transformation in her organization. After some very successful pilots, a substantial part of the organization has been transformed into new self-organizing structures and models. Even the office has been totally refurbished to facilitate the new methodologies, rituals and meetings. Then COVID-19 transformed the World. Looking at the empty offices she wonders what happened. “We were well on our way”, she thought. “Yes, we moved into agile structures and digitalized everything we could. We changed our way of working but we are still traditional thinkers. We followed the assumption that our people would change seamlessly. Nothing less is true.” She wonders: “How to move forward?”

Imagine you are Evelyn. What would you do? When you reflect on your own situation or the situation your company is in now, you maybe recognize a bit of what Evelyn is thinking?
Most of the organizations who start a transformation to become more business agile focus on infrastructure. Talking with companies we hear that tribes or self-organizing teams are introduced and Agile methods and rituals are implemented in parts of the organizations.

We often hear that organizations struggle with the way of leading this new way of working, that it is difficult to move from control to trust. We have identified a new purpose and new behaviours but who knows and cares about role modeling them? How are people able to change and learn new behaviours if they are treated and rewarded the old way? A department may be virtual and self-organized, it is still a department.

Going forward we cannot go back the old way. Going forward there is no new normal. There will be always something coming out of the eco-system impacting our business and personal lives. Going forward we need to think beyond the structures and our own organization, department or team. We need to look at the whole system. We are part of it and we have an impact on it.

During our session we take you on our journey. A journey that is not only about digitalization, structures and frameworks. It is about people. Get practical examples to experiment with on your journey to the future of work in which we all have an important role to play and to act upon.

Agile Budgeting
Jason will present a story about the shift from traditional corporate budgeting / investment models to Outcome-oriented corporate investing focused on maximizing a company’s impact and strategic adaptability over time.
Jason’s session will provide an overview of traditional budgeting practices, how they evolved, and a few of the significant limitations embedded in typical corporate budgeting and investment practices.  He’ll then explore emerging Outcomes-focused approaches to corporate budgeting and investments, and the range of compelling advantages these new approaches offer.  In the process, he’ll touch upon how organizations can sharpen their Strategic Intent, make better informed strategic decisions, and connect their Outcomes with the work teams are prioritizing daily through OKR processes and digitization.
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of:
  • Limitations of traditional corporate budgeting and investment practices, and why they evolved the way they did
  • The benefits of Outcome-focused budgeting and investment practices, and ways in which they can benefit your company or clients
  • The importance of leveraging digital solutions for Outcome-focused investment management and governance
  • The critical role that Portfolio Management teams and Outcome Owners should play to maximize the impact of Outcome-focused investment practices

Scaling Agile across business functions
When considering how to apply Agile to business, many types of Agile have been developed, such as Agile for Sales, Agile Marketing, Agile Finance, etc.  However, how do you scale agile practicess within a function without creating a functional silo?  What good is it to create an “Agile Marketing department” that can’t communicate with other Agile departments?  This talk explores how to scale within functions with the goal of achieving cross-functional business agility.
We will discuss how strategy, product and operations can organize cross-functionally around value to deliver on the promise of business agility.

Deep Dive on Outcome Based Thinking
Do you struggle to get your team of seven on the same page?  Are you curious how companies like Intel, Google, LinkedIn, and Microsoft aligned their 10s of thousands of employees?  We were and then we learned about OKR - the tool to create or define outcomes and bring your strategy to life.

The Panelists will share their stories of how OKRs have bridged strategy to execution by focusing on outcomes and ensuring the right outcomes are achieved. OKRs are the mechanism for companies and teams to obsessively focused on outcomes and truly bring your strategy to life. They enable transparency throughout the entire organization. You will learn and practice how to write meaningful OKRs, differentiate between outcomes and activities, and embed OKRs in your current routines so you track success and anchor outcomes to the overall strategy.

Killing Agile - Process and Structure Efficiency Junkies
Introducing Agile Frameworks is a straight forward job. The principles are easy, the processes are lean and the roles are clear.

Why are still so many companies missing out in the successful and sustainable implementation of Business Agility in their organization?

Managers sometimes tend to optimize processes, structures, meetings, tools and lose the focus on what Business Agility is all about: Enabling the organization to build outstanding products and offer excellent service to their clients.

You might profit from insights and take away some ideas on how to avoid pitfalls and put on your “Don’t Do” list.

Applying the Grit and Resilience of and Ironman Triathlete to the Business World
Using lessons in Ironman (and similar) races, Gareth will map across to the world of work where Intentional Ways of Working can help people achieve success through focus and deliberate practice. The 5 key areas of discussion will be
1). Kata: As my coach tells me: "Don't practice until you get it right, Practice until you CANNOT get it wrong". Based on Toyota Kata, explaining the importance of technique practice in swimming, and how deliberate practice and habit forming can be applied at work. Drawing on the thinking of BJ Fogg, Malcolm Gladwell and Charles Duhigg
2) WIN (What’s Important Now?). The ability to maintain mental focus through framing and mental modelling. Examples of when surprises, like a puncture, can either frustrate or enhance the opportunity for success.
3) Grit from Goals, inspired by the work of Angela Duckworth and David Goggins discussing the importance of goal setting, and reflecting on the Stockdale Paradox when things go awry.
4) Consistency over intensity. Inspired by Kaizen rather than Kaikaku, explaining that to be successful in Endurance Racing takes prolonged and consistent effort with the compound of marginal gains. References will be made to Beresford and the British Cycling Team and James Clear's Atomic Habits
5) Ikigai. Finding your meaning and your 'Why'. Simon Sinek and Viktor Frankl will be referenced.

Agility Starts From the Inside, Out
Can an organisation be agile, if the people within it are not?
It’s been my experience that the biggest factor in determining an organisation’s agility, is the agility of the individual people within it.
Yet how many of our people have been geared with the knowledge & tools to strengthen their own agility?
In this talk, we explore the philosophy of Personal Agility, the role it plays in organisations scaling agility, and a simple approach to developing it as a leader.

Organic Intelligent Design: Self-Management & Self-Organization - How does it emerge?
Learnings from the self-organising world - what works & what doesn’t!

For the past 5 years we have been working completely self-organized, without bosses and org charts and even self-defined salaries. Over time we have learned what works for us and what doesn't - and we have seen patterns and extracted structural learnings from it.

How can you create a structure to create a learning organisation that always adjusts to the environment itself and what does it need to create a purpose and an identity for your organisation if it always adapts? What does it mean for me as an owner and a leader? What does leadership need to look like in such a setup? How can we make our ambitious thoughts from our Culture Book and the nice values on the wall stick? How can we live up to these every day without becoming dogmatic and missionary? How can we bring together individuals needs with the needs and demands of „it“ – the organisation?

These are some of the questions we asked ourselves and where we think you can learn from to make a transfer into your own organisation. Our focus will be on hands-on, tangible things one can change in the every day operation, not a theoretical lecture.

When the Tail doesn't Wag the Dog (Updated)
Focussing on Outcomes rather than Agile
In 2019 a pharma giant decided to “pilot Agile” in their clinical research division. Eight teams of between 80 and 100 people started, assisted by a group of deeply experienced agile coaches. One by one the pilots were cancelled by the leaders. Only two survived and concluded successfully. Did it mean the teams were Agile in the conventional sense? Not by a long shot. Did it mean they were more successful? Absolutely! Rework that was costing the company hundreds of thousands of euros was just one of the many things that changed.
In this session we will explore the tale of the successful pilot, focussing on the role, attitude and learnings of the leaders, how they engaged with the pilot, their teams, and the coaches, and what they did that led to the successful outcome, and the continued growth of agility even two years later. Without an agile coach in sight...

The Future of Agile: Remote and Asynchronous
The evolution of agile from collocated software teams to becoming the operating system of large and small businesses with a geographically distributed workforce.

Working remotely is not just working from a "different" location.

In the last decade, collocated team members were front and centre and remote workers were an afterthought. In the coming decade, remote workers will be front and centre.

Teams and organisations need to adapt their communication and collaboration processes to the new reality that has emerged. Future workplaces will be digital yet truly inclusive, respectful of freedom and independent of location and time.

The current style of management will no longer be relevant as the world is changing. The future of leadership is remote-first and asynchronous.

Learnings from this session will be:

  • Challenging your assumptions about working remotely
  • How to effectively empower and lead remote teams
  • The main ingredients of a scalable agile business with remote teams
  • The first steps from synchronous to asynchronous management

The power of business agility in law firms
Leandro will tell a story about a law firm within the largest bank in Brazil, which was facing a downward spiral, was mired in inefficiency, demotivation, low results and long working days, and how, in response to these problems, he used the agile culture, the Scrum framework and a new strategic positioning from managers to achieve expressive outcomes like exponential productivity, cost reduction, a high degree of engagement of lawyers and unprecedented client satisfaction. He will also tell how, from the success of the agile law firm, business agility spread to many other areas and started a great agile integration project - the AdvOps.
La historia cubrirá:
How law firms are structured in a conventional way, based on an offline reality
The problems that arise from this conventional structure
The new online reality and the need for a structure compatible with it (the Scrum framework), the new strategic positioning from managers and the solid agile culture
The outcomes
The evolution: the AdvOps
#El aprendizaje será:
Why a traditional work structure has become obsolete in a hyperconnected and commoditized world
How new positioning from managers can bring real strategic alignment
How an agile culture can eliminate analysis paralysis
Why law firms should embrace agility to achieve expressive results

Maximizing the Time-to-Value to Citizens
According to the consulting firm McKinsey, 80% of public sector transformation projects fail to meet objectives. But the need of change is real and is driven by the need to adapt to the fastmoving changes (emerging technologies, pandemic, demographics changes) that are affecting the sector and how it serves its citizens.

The purpose of the presentation is to show how we can maximize the time-to-value to citizens and improve citizen experience despite the constraints of the public sector.

Through this story, the objective is also to provide some insightful inputs on how and where opportunities exist to increase the flow of value to citizens.

How to Fortify an Agile Transformation and Deliver Value Faster
We hear about this all the time – so many agile transformations that focus on process and doing Agile, while what really needs attention is a focus on being Agile -- the “Upside Down” of Agile that may be undetectably impeding progress and impacting success. It’s that invisible yet ever-present force that directs a team’s successful (or not) agile execution, just like the bowling bumpers that direct a bowling ball down a lane to its target pins.

While anyone can make a difference, leaders often underutilize their bang-for-buck power to unleash a team’s potential within the “Right-side Up” to achieve results faster and more effectively. Embedding Leadership Coaching in the business is a powerful tool to ensure leaders are well-poised in this process. It helps make the invisible, visible, by providing leaders with a scaffolding of support and a prompt to explore first what may be transpiring within themselves, like a computer’s operating system behind its applications, in advance of what is transpiring within their teams and the business.

This story will share how embedded leadership coaching can impact strategic initiatives to support a faster path to business outcomes through high performance teams. Internal coaches have the perspective, institutional context, ability to observe and then unpack situations, behavior and team dynamics. Sue will shed light on how leadership coaches internal to an organization represent an often underutilized facet of agile being and mindset development. She’ll share insight into how leaders’ willingness to expose their “LeaderOS” in combination with feedback delivery and accountability can help leaders become their best selves and enable empowered teams, iterative learning and desired results.
